Nu Chapter at the University of Kansas cuts the ribbon on its $4.3 millon renovation of Stubbs Mansion
Few chapters in Sigma Nu (or any fraternity) are fortunate to have a chapter house with both the rich history and stately character of Nu Chapter at the University of Kansas. Affectionately known as Stubbs Mansion, the 118-year-old residence has served as Nu Chapter’s treasured home for over a century. This year, that legacy entered a new chapter with the completion of a transformative $4.3 million renovation.
Made possible through the generosity of more than 300 alumni and friends, the three-year expansion and refurbishment project prioritized the creation of gathering spaces that support modern collegiate life while preserving the architectural integrity of the historic home. The result is a thoughtfully renewed chapter house that honors the past and equips Nu Chapter for generations to come.
On the first floor, brothers and guests are welcomed into a newly constructed entry foyer that opens into an expanded dining hall designed to bring the entire chapter together. A renovated chapter room and the new Walter J. Sears Study Hall—named in honor of Nu #50 and author of the Creed of Sigma Nu—underscore the chapter’s commitment to scholarship and principle. An ADA-accessible suite further enhances the home’s functionality and hospitality.
Upstairs, newly created living and study rooms surround a central social hub known as “The Rock Room,” a tribute to Nu Chapter’s 13 Rock Chapter Awards. A large, modern bathroom and upgraded residential accommodations improved daily life for collegiate members, while the reconfiguration of living space allowed the basement to be transformed into dedicated workout, study, and lounge areas.
Throughout the renovation, careful attention was paid to preserving and highlighting the home’s historic character. Original millwork was refinished, vintage photographs restored and prominently displayed, and previously covered brick and limestone walls exposed to celebrate the craftsmanship of the 118-year-old structure. Each wall throughout the house was intentionally curated to tell Nu Chapter’s story—from its four Alpha Chapter affiliates and recent KU Chapter of the Year honors to displays recognizing chapter “Legends,” military heroes, former house mothers, and standout student-athletes. The renovated chapter room is wrapped in photographs spanning 142 years of Nu brotherhood.
The project was completed on schedule and on budget thanks to the dedicated leadership of alumni volunteers and the collaboration of KSQ Design and MarLan Construction. Their exceptional work earned a prestigious Historic Preservation Award from the American Institute of Architects, affirming the project’s vision and execution.
The official ribbon-cutting and dedication were held during KU’s annual Homecoming weekend. Hundreds of alumni, collegiate brothers, university officials, and guests—including Sigma Nu Divisional Commander Jeremy Edwards (Tulsa)—gathered for house tours and recognition of the renovation steering committee. It was a once-in-a-generation celebration of a NU-ly invigorated home—one that stands ready to support the continued excellence of Nu Chapter for decades to come.
