69th Grand Chapter

*Update* March 24, 2021

As you know, the 69th Grand Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity is scheduled to occur June 23-27, 2021 in San Diego, California. Due to the health and safety threats of the continuing global COVID-19 pandemic, related restrictions, and the lack of certainty regarding pandemic conditions in the near future, the Fraternity’s board of directors, the High Council, has made the decision to conduct the 69th Grand Chapter virtually, rather than in-person.

This decision was made following careful consideration of all options for conducting the business of the Grand Chapter, including the possibility of a further postponement to the summer of 2022. The decision reflects the Council’s conclusions that a further postponement of the Fraternity’s legislative convention is not prudent, and a virtual conclave offers the only certain means of safely conducting the Grand Chapter on the scheduled dates of June 23-27, 2021. Underlying both conclusions is the Fraternity’s commitment to health and safety.

Our team is working to finalize arrangements for the virtual 69th Grand Chapter and will update you accordingly. As soon as possible, each collegiate chapter should determine two representatives to the Grand Chapter, and each alumni chapter determines one representative, in keeping with Article Fourteen, Section 2.3 of The Law of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Inc. Online registration will be available soon.

Please take a moment to review the FAQ document and do not hesitate to reach out to me or any member of our staff team with any additional question you may have.

Thank you for your leadership for Sigma Nu!

Fraternally,

Brad Beacham (Texas Christian)
Executive Director

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the 69th Grand Chapter being held in a virtual format?

In consideration of the threat to health and safety presented by the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions, a virtual format for the 69th Grand Chapter allows for the completion of the important work of the Grand Chapter while prioritizing the health and safety of all involved.

Is a virtual Grand Chapter allowed?

Yes. Sigma Nu Fraternity, Inc. is incorporated in the state of Indiana. An executive order by the Governor of Indiana authorizes Indiana corporations to conduct a meeting of members in a virtual format due to the health and safety emergency created by the global COVID-19 pandemic. The Law of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Inc. does not prohibit a virtual Grand Chapter.

Why was the 69th Grand Chapter not postponed again?

The Fraternity’s board of directors, the High Council, determined it was not prudent for the important governance work of the Grand Chapter to be postponed for an additional year. The 68th Grand Chapter occurred in Summer 2018.

Was a change in location considered?

Yes. While certain other locations presently have fewer pandemic-related restrictions, the future status of such restrictions is unknown. Thus, a location change would not ensure the 69th Grand Chapter could be conducted.

Was a hybrid event, in which some attend in-person and some attend virtually, considered?

Yes. Unfortunately, the uncertain nature of future pandemic conditions renders any large, indoor meeting a potential health and safety threat. Further, the logistical challenges of a hybrid legislative convention were determined to be unacceptable.

How will the business of the 69th Grand Chapter be completed in a virtual format?

Virtual meeting gathering and convention software will be deployed to safely and securely complete the work of the 69th Grand Chapter in compliance with Indiana law and The Law of Sigma Nu Fraternity. Inc.

What happens to the Conclave Fee paid by collegiate chapters?

The Conclave Fee paid by collegiate chapters funds certain costs for the annual College of Chapters and biannual Grand Chapter. The amount of the fee is adjusted periodically depending upon the cost of these conclaves. It is anticipated a virtual Grand Chapter will have a lower cost than an in-person Grand Chapter, which would result in a reduction in the Conclave Fee in the 2021-2022 year.

With the 69th Grand Chapter being conducted virtually, will the 70th Grand Chapter still take place in 2023?

Yes, the 70th Grand Chapter will occur between June 15 and August 30, 2023, in accordance with The Law of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Inc.

How will proposed legislation for the 69th Grand Chapter be handled?

All legislative matters will be handled in accordance with The Law of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Inc. Information regarding the submission of legislative proposals will be published in advance of the 69th Grand Chapter.

Will High Council elections still occur?

Yes, business of the Grand Chapter, including the election of the High Council, will be completed, in accordance with The Law of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Inc.

How many chapter participants will be able to attend?

A collegiate chapter in good standing may have two representatives to the Grand Chapter and an alumni chapter in good standing may have one representative, pursuant to The Law of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Inc. Information regarding additional participants will be published in advance of the 69th Grand Chapter.
