Sigma Nu Brothers Recognized for Interfraternal Excellence

Higher Education

Three distinguished brothers, one Rock Chapter, and one of the Fraternity’s leading educational efforts were recognized recently as part of the North American Interfraternity Conference’s (NIC) 2019 Awards of Distinction, recognizing excellence in the interfraternal community.

Gage Calhoon of the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter at Oklahoma State University

Gage Calhoon of Sigma Nu’s Epsilon Epsilon Chapter at Oklahoma State University and Connor Ganly of Sigma Nu’s Epsilon Mu Chapter at Butler University were selected for the Undergraduate Award of Distinction, presented to a select group of fraternity men who have found in their experience an outlet for developing as both a leader and a better man.

Brother Calhoon was previously recognized as Sigma Nu’s Scholar of the Year in 2018. He recently completed his bachelor’s in finance and pre-med studies with a perfect 4.0 GPA and scored in the 97th percentile on the MCAT, earning him a medical school scholarship. At Oklahoma State, Calhoon served as Vice President of Student Giving Campaigns and was recognized as OSU’s Homecoming King in 2017.

Connor Ganly of the Epsilon Mu Chapter at Butler University

Brother Ganly was previously recognized as Sigma Nu’s Man of the Year in 2018. He recently served on the Fraternity’s High Council as a Collegiate Grand Councilman and held numerous chapter and campus community leadership roles while maintaining a 3.66 GPA in Butler University’s pharmacy program. At Butler, Ganly was President of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy and was recognized as one of Butler University’s top 100 students.

Sigma Nu’s Epsilon Xi Chapter at the University of Mississippi was selected for the NIC’s Chapter Award of Distinction that recognizes collegiate chapters that perform at high level and educate others about the benefits of a values-based fraternity experience. The Epsilon Xi Chapter was recognized as one of Sigma Nu’s Rock Chapters in 2018, the highest achievement for a collegiate chapter. At 287 members the chapter maintained a 3.10 GPA with 84% of members involved in campus organizations and 12% holding leadership positions. Sigma Nu’s Epsilon Xi Chapter was among five fraternities nationwide to earn this elite distinction out of the approximately 6,000 eligible NIC chapters on 800 campuses.

Epsilon Xi (Mississippi) House Corporation President John Green (Mississippi) was selected for the NIC’s Advisor Award of Distinction that recognizes dedication to guiding and mentoring the fraternity members with whom they work, and exemplifies the highest standards of character, leadership and interfraternalism both personally and professionally. Brother Green was previously recognized as Sigma Nu’s House Corporation Officer of the Year in 2018. He has served on Epsilon Xi’s House Corporation since 2009, serving as its President since 2014. In his tenure, Brother Green has counseled countless collegiate brothers and guided them towards achieving their post-graduate plans.

Sigma Nu’s educational poster series, in partnership with Alpha Chi Omega, Pi Kappa Phi, and Zeta Tau Alpha, was selected for the NIC’s Laurel Wreath Award that recognizes unique programs, community outreach, or key influence within the fraternal world. The ongoing series of educational posters address a myriad of health and safety topics concerning students such as hazing, alcohol abuse, mental health and sexual misconduct. Copies of the posters and discussion guides are mailed to fraternity/sorority life offices across North America and to every chapter of the sponsoring organizations. The relevant messaging of these posters provides educators a helpful point of entry for important health and safety conversations.
