Arizona State University

Arizona State University was established in 1885, in the city of Tempe, Arizona. Arizona State is a top-ranked research university in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area.
The Chapter originally received its charter in the Spring of 1955, which was led by Dan Ellis and members of the Epsilon Alpha Chapter of University of Arizona. A group of men coined the name "Nu Sigma" and turned that organization into what is now the Zeta Upsilon Chapter at Arizona State, given the distinction of the 135th chapter of Sigma Nu. The Chapter received the Rock Chapter award in 1986, 1988, and 1994, and was continuously viewed as a powerhouse on the Tempe campus.
After being removed from campus in 2012, the re-colonization process begun in Spring of 2017. Understandably, there were some struggles at the beginning, but after recruiting around 30 members, the goal of receiving the charter was looking optimistic. In just over a year, the charter was submitted to headquarters, and approved in February of 2018. Upon the chartering ceremony on September 15, 2018, Zeta Upsilon went over the 1500 badge number. Now standing at 79 members, after a 30-man candidate class, Zeta Upsilon continues to improve day in and day out. Alumni traveled from all over the country to share this special occasion. Former Mayor of Tempe, Neil Giuliano, alumnus of Zeta Upsilon, even hosted an alumnus get together the Friday evening before the event. With the second highest GPA in the IFC, 86% of members involved in other campus organizations, and just recently moving in to the Greek Leadership Village. Sigma Nu at Arizona State University is exhibiting what Sigma Nu strives to be on every college campus.

Campus Snapshot: University of Virginia was established in 1819 and classes commenced in 1825, in the city of Charlottesville, Virginia. The school was founded by former President and Declaration of Independence author Thomas Jefferson.
The Chapter originally received its charter in 1871, it is the oldest active chapter since Alpha Chapter at Virginia Military Institute. Beta’s charter was removed in Spring of 2014 and progress to regain their charter back began in Spring of 2017. The Chartering weekend began on Friday October 19, 2018 night where the members came to the chapter house on 189 Culbreath for a cookout reception to show off the historic chapter property and introduce Regent John Hearn to members. Saturday October 20, 2018 the official chartering ceremony was underway at the Historic Chapter home which was followed by a banquet at the Farmington Country Club. Some people to recognize that were in attendance are Tom Keller, who graduated from Trinity College and although, he is not an alumnus of Beta, he is a past staff member of Sigma Nu. He has also been involved with Beta Chapter at the University of Virginia since they recolonized, and he now serves as the AAB Chairman. Caroline Ott, who is the Program Coordinator for Fraternity and Sorority Life, was also there to give a speech about the Chapter’s progress from colony to successful chapter and expressed how the men have done a great job of becoming leaders on campus. She encouraged them to keep up the great work and to go out and make a difference in their community. Walter Birkel was a big motivator for the men of the Beta Colony at the time, he worked to keep the house in good shape while it was closed. He has made an impact on the chapter and the men involved. Matt Middleton is a Beta Chapter initiate and is now the chapter advisor who was also in attendance.
Beta Chapter is now up to badge number 1774 and on campus currently have 51 initiated members. They look forward to continuing to strive for excellence and to become men of the Legion of Honor.
