Letter from the Editor

Service and sacrifice are enduring threads that run through the fabric of Sigma Nu’s history, binding generations of brothers who have answered the call to lead, to give, and to serve something greater than themselves. From the heroism of Brother Jack Hamlin (Drury), who risked his life to save others on the beaches of Normandy, to the generosity of brothers rallying behind the Mighty Oaks Campaign, our story is one of men who consistently choose purpose over comfort, and legacy over self-interest. Their examples remind us that the strength of our brotherhood has always been measured not only in achievements, but in the willingness to give of oneself for the good of others and our honorable mission.

As you explore this issue, we hope you are inspired by the remarkable stories of service, leadership, and perseverance that define Sigma Nu. Our cover feature introduces the $4 million Mighty Oaks Campaign, a historic effort to enhance our headquarters in Lexington, Va., and opportunities for brothers to gather, learn, and lead at the symbolic heart of Sigma Nu. You’ll learn about the events and activities of the 71st Grand Chapter, which took place in San Antonio earlier this summer. You’ll also encounter inspiring stories of brothers from chapters across the country. Gary Newton (Arkansas) followed an unconventional path from chapter leadership to the entertainment industry, ultimately returning home to champion education and community growth. Mitch Purgason (Appalachian State) built his career through hard work and the guidance of mentors who invested in his success. Steve Garraty (Georgia) shares how a life-threatening illness gave him a profound sense of gratitude (pg. 62). And in a moving tribute, we reflect on the extraordinary courage of Jack Hamlin (Drury), a D-Day rescuer, public servant, and lifelong exemplar of honor and sacrifice.

Additionally, this issue of The Delta spotlights outstanding alumni and chapter news. This issue also includes a report of our annual award recipients for 2025, including the esteemed alumni inducted into the Fraternity’s Hall of Honor and Hall of Fame.

We hope you enjoy this issue and would love to hear from you with feedback and ideas for stories we should consider for future issues. Letters to the editor, comments, and general feedback can be sent to news@sigmanu.org.

Fraternally,
