More than the administrative center of the Fraternity, the Headquarters campus is a place where history, tradition, and purpose converge. Overlooking the birthplace of Sigma Nu at Virginia Military Institute, the campus welcomes thousands of brothers and guests each year to explore the Fraternity’s museum and archives, reflect on the legacy of our Founders, participate in leadership programs, and strengthen their lifelong connection to Sigma Nu. A Brief History

Sigma Nu’s Headquarters in Lexington, Va., was dedicated on Thursday, June 9, 1960, during a simple yet memorable late-afternoon ceremony. Nearly 300 fraternity members and friends gathered on the lawn in front of the enclosure that safeguards a section of The Rock.
Sigma Nu, the first fraternity to employ a full-time Executive Secretary—Brother Dick Fletcher (Penn State)—and establish a central office, had maintained its headquarters in Indianapolis, Ind., since 1915. In 1954, a Headquarters Committee was appointed, and Lexington was selected as the new location. In 1957, then-Regent James Bradley (Oklahoma State) and the High Council authorized the purchase—without mortgage or lien—of a tract of land and the large home situated on it.
Milton L. Grigg, a distinguished architect from Charlottesville, Va., was commissioned to restore and remodel the building to meet Sigma Nu’s needs. Renovations began in July 1957 and were completed in just seven months. The building was first occupied in February 1958, with additional improvements made over the years, including the construction of driveways, extensive landscaping, the installation of The Rock and Rose, and the addition of the East and West Wings.
The Ethical Leadership Center
As Sigma Nu’s programs and membership continued to grow, so did the Headquarters campus. In 1989, the Fraternity expanded with the acquisition and restoration of the neighboring Federal-style residence known as Morningside, which was transformed into the Ethical Leadership Center—a vision of Brother Fletcher that continues to serve as a gathering place for Foundation, High Council, and leadership meetings. Fletcher’s nearby field office, preserved as he left it, stands as a tribute to his lifelong service and leadership.
The campus continued to evolve with the addition of the Carriage House Barracks to provide lodging for visiting brothers and staff, the Memorial Rose Arbor and Pathway of Honor recognizing generations of donors and members, and the Robert L. Marchman III Memorial Flag Pavilion, dedicated in 2004 and expanded in 2019 with a War Memorial honoring the more than 700 Sigma Nu brothers who gave their lives in service to the United States.
The Spears Family Epsilon Epsilon Center for Excellence
The most recent chapter in the evolution of Sigma Nu Headquarters came with the dedication of the Spears Family Epsilon Epsilon Center for Excellence on February 17, 2023. Made possible through a $1.5 million challenge gift from Brother Dr. William S. Spears (Oklahoma State/Texas Tech) and his wife, Candye, along with the support of nearly 300 Brothers of the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter and many additional donors, the Center represents the most significant expansion of the Headquarters campus in more than three decades. Designed to support Sigma Nu’s growing leadership and educational initiatives, the facility accommodates up to 84 overnight guests—doubling the campus’s residential capacity—and provides modern meeting and learning spaces that ensure the Headquarters remains a premier destination for developing ethical leaders inspired by the principles of Love, Honor, and Truth.
