25 Years in Huntsville

Chapter & Alumni News

The Mu Beta Chapter at the University of Alabama-Huntsville celebrated the 25th anniversary of receiving its charter on January 28, 2017. The chapter celebrated at the Embassy Suites in downtown Huntsville, inviting alumni, current members and their guests. A highlight of the evening was a slideshow of pictures representing the past 25 years. In addition, Matt Youngkin, Vice Regent Maury Gaston (Auburn), and Division Commander Patrick Bobo each made remarks with their reflections on the chapter’s accomplishments.

This academic year, the chapter participated in the set-up, operation and clean-up at one of Huntsville’s grandest social events, the Margarita Ball, held in November. Two Mu Beta alumni serve on the board of directors of the Huntsville Margarita Society, which hosts the event and distributes the toys collected at the ball to local charities. In the spring, the chapter refocused its efforts on recruitment, which paid off in seven spring candidates—a record for the chapter.

Members have completed approximately 500 hours of community service since January; each member logs an average of 25 hours per semester. A few examples of the chapter’s many community service opportunities include: setting up for Special Olympics, campus cleanup, helping park cars at events and festivals, and volunteering at the Legacy Elementary School winter carnival.

On March 7, 2017, the chapter hosted a brother auction fundraiser in honor of two brothers who have passed away as a result of brain cancer. They raised $1,381 to benefit the Lingo family from Madison, Alabama, who has a child with brain cancer. One of the brothers knows this family and suggested raising the money to help them in their time of need. Brothers Zachary Ruta, Ryan Thornton and Nathan Perinovic will deliver the funds raised to the family.
